JOB TITLE:            Insurance Specialist

DEPARTMENT:       Business Services Department/Business Office

REPORTS TO:        Director of Business Office



Answering and responding to incoming Business Office telephone calls, coordination with assigned third party payers, investigating and reprocessing denied claims.



  • Answers incoming calls to the Business Office.
  • Attempts to assist patients and resolve billing issues.
  • Routes calls to proper person if unable to help.
  • Uses excellent communication skills and provides good customer service to patients, internal staff and external contacts.
  • Attends various meetings and enhances professional development and growth on a regular basis
  • Provides recommendation for revision and/or new departmental procedures in conjunction with manager.
  • Monitor outstanding aging for assigned payors on a daily basis, in order to increase reimbursement. Specific responsibilities include and are not limited to:
    • Using payor website for status and/or appeals;
    • Calling insurance companies when unable to determine status or when unclear of required action;
    • Verifying eligibility and updating as needed;
    • Obtain referrals;
    • Re-filing claims corrected or otherwise;
    • Working of credit balances on a timely basis, for assigned payers;
    • Appealing denied claims, and
    • Verifying reimbursement.
  • Remains up-to-date and knowledgeable of basic insurance information, as well as remaining current about federal legislative changes that affect outcomes.
  • Complete any/all assigned business office tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Works toward compliance in every aspect of position. Reports any compliance concerns to manager or to the Compliance Committee.
  • Incorporates the use of Technology. Utilizes Web tools to verify insurance and check claims status. Uses clearinghouse edits to prevent billing rejections.  
  • Maximizes reimbursement through the timely filing of claims. Ensures reimbursement at the correct levels according to a contracted rate.     


  • Incorporates the use of technology into day-to-day tasks by using Microsoft Office Suite, and NextGen and Urochart effectively and accurately.
  • Knowledge of basic insurance policies, procedures and reimbursement practices.
  • Knowledge of clinic operations.
  • Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to prepare records in accordance with detailed instruction.
  • Represent Metro Urology, a division of Minnesota Urology P.A. in a professional manner related to appearance, communication and the maintenance of patient and company confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work efficiently with direct manager, administration, physicians, patients and staff
  • Ability to analyze work methods to effectively organize work, make improvements and correct problems.
  • Supportive of the goals and objectives of Minnesota Urology, P.A.



  •  Two (2) plus year's medical accounts receivable experience required.
  • Experience with third party payors and familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT codes.
  • Knowledge of NextGen and Urochart preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with Greenway Intergy EHR preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Possess strong denial follow-up experience, as well as excellent customer service skills
